The Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action are important to myself as a future educator because it provides ways to address the historical and ongoing effects of colonialism and residential schools on Indigenous peoples in Canada. Educators should be acknowledging the history and how the ongoing actions still affect Indigenous peoples today. Speaking about the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action in your classroom creates a sense of belonging and guides students to be culturally responsible. The Professional Standards for BC Educators are also guided by the TRC calls to action. When becoming an educator, we commit to reconciliation and decolonization in our practice.
